15:29 5/20/15: I have just posted your final and course grade. Look under My Grade on Blackbaord.
Rankings changed a lot for this final (probably this is scheduled during the exam week). Quite a few of you completed the calculation part on the final this time and I'll call that an achievement. Thanks for your hard work.
Final and course point distribution is posted under Exam Results below.
The crown goes to:
Kourtney at smashing 3.007
Carlos at 2.987
Traylan at 2.058
Xiomara at 1.038
Faith at .995
*applause*
Some of you made a great progress throughout the course (you know who you are). I am very proud of you guys.
Well, that's all, folks. My job here is done. Fly away, birds. With your macroeconomic knowledge under your belt.
I'll be here next semester. Don't be a stranger and stop by any time.
Have a great summer!
14:18 5/7/15: Thanks for the card and all the thoughtful comments.
Logan's comment ("p.s., this is blue") made me laugh.
To me, everyone in this class is a combination red (primary importance) and green (fun and/or surprises).
This class would not have been possible without your dedication and I hope you enjoyed the class as much as I did.
Good luck with the final (remember, it starts at 11 AM). Shoot me an email if you need any help.
20:50 5/5/15: Here's your last Hot off the Press. As requested, I'll hold extra office hours from 12:45 to 2:05 on Thursday, May 14th.
11:12 5/1/15: I had to swap Figure 18 on Hot off the Press. The one I posted yesterday doesn't have enough tick labels on the x-axis to find the accurate number to solve 19.18.
Everything else is the same. When you download Hot off the Press, check the date on the first papge. The one with May 1, 2015 at 11:11 is the most recent one.
Happy May.
15:30 4/23/15: New Hot off the Press is up. Just a quick reminder that Chapter 18 is due this Sunday. Enjoy your weekend.
9:46 4/22/15: I just added one more question to Hot off the Press just fyi.
As a general rule of thumb, check the date on the first page of Hot off the Press.
Make sure that the date is after the lecture time. If it is postmarked before the lecture time, you'll have to reload.
20:30 4/21/15: Hot off the Press is up. Help yourself. Also, thanks Krystal, Carlos, Xiomara and Candy for the food (sorry if I missed someone. There were lots of stuff today).
I hope you enjoyed the picnic. On Thursday, we will meet at the regular classroom.
16:18 4/16/15: Hot off the Press is up. I've corrected Question #9.11. Read chapter 18, stay dry and have a good weekend.
14:13 4/16/15: I'd like to thank Christy for very tastey cheesecakes and Candy for juice in the space-age form.
We will try the nerd picnic again on Tuesday.
Let's hope that it won't rain on our parade next time.
Krystal found an error on Hot off the Press. Hold off Question #9.11. I'll correct it when I post a new one later today.
11:59 4/16/15: Nerd picnic is pushed back to Tuesday due to the weather. The class will meet at the regular location today.
16:23 4/9/15: Fresh Hot off the Press is up. Help yourself. Enjoy your weekend.
18:13 4/8/15: Your exam result is up. Go to Blackboard and look under My Grades.
Those who completed the two computational questions (12 points in total) are all in the A range.
Partly because of this, our distribution is fat to the right end (cf. Exam Results below).
I will not disclose the top three students as requested but if you would like to know your current standing, look at your t-stat posted online and you should be able to locate where you are in Exam Results below.
It took some time but one of you went from a C- (pilot) to an A- (this time). He's my hope.
And there are quite a few of you who exhibited a constant progress over time and I appreciate your effort.
16:54 3/31/15: New Hot off the Press is up.
I won't hold office hours on next Thursday for the workshop below.
I will hold extra office hours from 11 to noon on Friday instead.
Shoot me an email to make an appointment if you would like to see me outside the office hours above.
19:53 3/26/15: Free Hot off the Press is up. Speaking of free,
just in case you missed the announcement in class today, I will be hosting a little talk/activities titled
"Invitation to Urban and Network Economics: How is Beaumont a Dwarf?" as part of the Academic Enhancement Workshops series by STARS.
Stop by if you're interested. Details to follow:
What:
You'll have a taste of introductory urban economics in the virtual city of Beaumont,
and get introduced to the frontier of urban and network economics.
When:
2:15 to 3:15 on Thursday, April 2nd.
Where:
An open area on the 6th floor in the library.
Who:
Anyone interested is welcome to join.
No prior knowledge of economics is required (that's something you'll come back with after the workshop).
19:45 3/12/15: The last Hot off the Press before the break. Take this before you go out to pet or hunt deer (I'm still not sure what Texans do). Have a good and safe spring break!
21:48 3/6/15: Hot off the Press is ready. I got a question from Faith and Gerald about how we get from goods or financial markets to IS-LM.
If they're iffy about it, there's a good chance that most of my students are iffy about it too.
I've decided to take a different approach and tried to reintroduce the same thing we did yesterday without using a single equation and exclusively with graphs,
which took me some time.
And because of that, it's more of like Lukewarm off the Press this time, but hope it'll help.
Do me a favor and send me a shout-out if graphic approach worked for you, then I'll make an LM version (the current Hot off the Pressonly got the IS in it. I'm testing the water first).
11:28 3/4/15: I was going over your exam one by one and obviously some of you have never read the textbook.
I'm a bit disappointed that some of you didn't know what high-powered money consists of.
I wrote that in red and it's explained in the textbook in detail.
I don't want to just repeat what's written on the textbook (a dog can do that) and I assume that you have finished your reading assignment before the lecture
so I can talk about the material from a different (sometimes cheesecake related) perspective or try some applications in class.
I will launch a new project (which I think I'd like to call Pot Luck) on Thursday to rectify this.
If this new project takes off, I'll make it part of your grade.
More details on Thursday in class.
23:44 3/3/15: Your exam result is up. Go to Blackboard and look under My Grades.
The result was pretty good, especially for those who completed the two computational questions (12 points in total).
Partly because of this, there are two peaks in this class, one around Traylan and the other around a B- area (cf. Exam Results below).
The previous queens and king keep a solid hold on the reins:
Kourtney at 2.705
Traylan at 2.528
Carlos at 1.996
Good work, as usual.
The top three students aside, I see lots of churning in this exam (cf. Progress Report under Exam Results below).
Some of you redeemed yourself (one of you actually went from an F to a B+. I appreciate your hard work and your effort certainly shows. Please keep up the good work.
For those who got stuck below a C or went down to a C and lower this time, come see me during the office hours and we'll work something out.
21:20 3/3/15: Some of you got a wrong bubble sheet. It's Form #882-E (see the image to the right).
I manually graded for those who used a wrong form (which negates the whole purpose of bubble sheets) for this time but bring the right form next time.
I'm still grading but I'll post your grade by Thursday.
11:48 3/2/15: I'll have to change the office hours this week (I'll have to step out for a meeting on Tuesday and Thursday).
Office hours for this week are:
Monday from 4 to 5
Tuesday from 9:20 to 10:20 and 4 to 5
Wednesday from 4 to 5
Regular office hours resume next week. Sorry for the inconvenience.
As always, you can shoot me an email to schedule an appointment outside my regular office hours.
13:03 2/25/15: Hot off the Press is up. My apologies for late posting this time. Pretty swamped here. I'll see you tomorrow.
22:15 2/23/15: Exercise caution when you come to school tomorrow. Incremental weather is expected. There is no need to come to school if it does not seem safe to do so.
As I wrote in the syllabus, I will cancel the class if
Lamar is not closed but I cannot make it to school, in which case, I will make an announcement here (do note that I used to live in Minnesota though).
I'll (hopefully) see you tomorrow.
19:25 2/19/15: New Hot off the Press is up. Help yourself. Enjoy your weekend.
14:20 2/19/15: Correction: I just realized that I put the statements backwards in class (quite possibly because I thought I would die. I'm still alive though. Thanks).
Correct your lecture note as follows:
In the answer to the question "Why is central bank's money called HIGHPOWERED?", 1/2: Say c = 0 (economy with no bankseconomy where nobody holds currency).
And then for 2/2: Say c = 1 (economy where nobody holds currencyeconomy with no banks).
My apologies. Also note that multiplier = 1/(reserve ratio) works only when c = 0. I'll post Hot off the Press later.
16:18 2/17/15: Hot off the Press is up. Just fyi, the best time to try this is right now (or at least before the next lecture) rather than right before the exam,
by which time you will have forgotten some of the material and it will be costly for you to remember everything, resulting in a C or lower.
I post Hot off the Press after each lecture to help you retain and review the information before you forget.
Ten minutes you spend reviewing Hot off the Press now is worth 60 minutes or more of your time right before the exam.
Don't wait around and make the most of your time by spreading your workload over time.
I'll see you on Thursday, by which time I expect you to have finished Hot off the Press.
21:23 2/12/15: Hot off the Press up. Try it before it gets cold. Enjoy your weekend.
21:16 2/11/15: Pilot exam result is up. Go to Blackboard and look under My Grades.
The crown goes to
Kourtney at 1.942
Carlos and Traylan at 1.226
Good work, people. If your t-stat is around zero, you scored around the average.
If your score is above 1, a happy dance. If it's above 2, there's a halo above your head.
If you received a C- or lower this time, it is not the end of the world (yet), but you will have to change the way you study up for the exam if you want to make it to the end.
If you would like to go over the exam, stop by during my office hours.
The distribution is posted under Exam Results below.
20:09 2/10/15: Hot off the Press available. I took up Jacob's suggestion and switched the name from Bisque to Hot off the Press.
As the name suggests, it loses value unless you try it immediately after each lecture. If you don't like the new name, throw rocks at him, not me. I also took up Justin's suggestion to make the font darker here.
If you don't like this, you know where to throw rocks.
15:54 2/3/15: Correction: For problem #4, set I = 350 rather than I = 150 (sorry!). Also, the graphic file we have below (Constructing GDP Demand) is actually the right one.
I accidentally ran a file for problem #4 in class. Have a look at Constructing GDP Demand and observe how three ingredients pile up to make Yd.
Also, do not forget to bring a pencil and a Scantron sheet with you for the pilot exam on Tuesday (the one with 50 bubbles on each side).
You may bring a calculator as well if you like (not your fancy phone but an old-school kind that doesn't tweet or take over the world).
14:49 1/29/15: Bisque is up (you might have to refresh depending on your browser setting). Also, you do not have to log on to Blackboard to do your homework on MyEconLab. Just click on the link below and follow the instructions. You may find the instruction information below under MyEconLab Registration Information. Enjoy your weekend.
